Don’t have a big wardrobe budget? That’s fine! Shoe shopping gets addicting, and it can often be hard to deny yourself those funky jewel tone flats or sky high stilettos that will spend more time in the dust bag than on the ground. However, if you buy your shoes wisely, you will see that once you have the basics, there is often room in your budget and in your wardrobe for shoes to spice up your everyday looks. I will show the five “must-have” work shoes for winter:

1. A pair of basic black boots – If you can only buy one pair, I suggest going for a mid-calf with a low heel. This way, you have all the uses of a short boot with the added flexibility of the extra fabric. Ankle boots rarely flatter legs when worn with a skirt. I would always recommend wearing a high boot with a skirt—unless the skirt is a few inches above the knee, in which I would recommend a peep toe or classic pump.

2. Comfortable flats –Use them to dress down a dress or dress up your straight leg jeans. Also, don’t be afraid to go for something funky, especially if you find a comfortable flat in a great metallic shade.

3. The basic pump/peep-toe – An essential for work. Don’t pick anything too trendy, since this will become your “go to” shoe when you are racing out the door. A heel is always good, since it will dress up the outfit and give you a sophisticated, lean look.

4-5. Since I already solved your work wardrobe in the above three shoes, there is nothing that you absolutely “need” so buy what you “want!” Here are some of my recommendations for those special 4th and 5th pairs:

-Sleek wedge sandals: Worn before the weather gets cold, they have an amazing slimming effect on legs because they have the comfort of platforms with the frontward appearance of a high heel.

-Mary-Janes: This style never gets old. The most comfortable and practical shoes I have ever owned!

-Colored peep-toes: Sometimes a little color is all you need to make last years outfit feel like new.
