March 9, 2009 marks Barbie’s 50th Anniversary and we couldn’t be more excited!

While our favorite doll isn’t looking any older these days, fashionistas, designers and girls-at-heart all over the world are celebrating the milestone.  February’s New York Fashion Week featured a 50 model, 50+ designer fashion show devoted solely to Barbie and her history.  The show included looks from Barbie’s first 1959 appearance (photos below) in the iconic black and white striped swimsuit through the years to looks from today.

They’ve even designed a special edition 50th Anniversary Barbie for the occassion. While I would have put her in pink (in classic Barbie style) this dress is stunning, just like Barbie has been for 50 years.

In honor of Barbie’s anniversary here are some shoes that we feel Barbie would wear, both today and 50 years ago:

As any Barbie owner knows, her feet are made for heels.  (She’s definitely my kind of girl!)  These 4 inch hott pink pumps are just what any Barbie needs.

Any Barbie wardrobe also must include a fabulous pair of heels for her beautiful ball gowns.  These coral satin peep-toes with the knot detail is perfect for any special night on the town with Ken.

Finally, any Barbie girl needs a pair of shoes for her swimsuit.  These summery sandals feature pink leather with sequins and a bow, could you get more Barbie than that?

Isn’t it interesting that when the economy is in the dumps fashion designers decide that instead of inexpensive clothing we need gloomy clothing?

I understand that designers like Jill Sander (design seen below) aren’t going to begin selling things at half price.  That ruins a brands exclusivity and image.  However, I guess my thought is that when I am in the dumps and having a bad day, while my clothing may often reflect that, during a recession I don’t want to be in gloomy black clothing all of the time. This is the time when people need clothing to make them happier, not sadder.

If designers feel the need to pull it in (understandably), then I feel like we need a lot more basic styles like this look from Alexander McQueen (below).  While the model is scarier than the IRS coming to garnish your already non-existent wages, the look is a staple and the skinny fit is a good social commentary on the economy.  I’m okay with that.  Style should say something about the times.  Just not look like a bunch of men going to a funeral with average style like above.  (Plus, don’t you love the pop of color from the fingerless gloves?)

It will be interesting to see what future Fashion Weeks bring us as the economy continues to slide downward.

What are your thoughts on clothing during a recession?

Fashion royalty seems to have hit the runway in Paris this past week. Rapper Kanye West has debuted his very own shoe line, after admitting that he himself has about 450 pairs of shoes (I am but a novice compared to that). West has partnered up with Louis Vuitton and designed a line of sneakers that is sure to cost a little more than your Nike shox or your Puma cells.

kanyelouisshoe-499x376The line features sneakers in colors like red, black, pink, and tan, but as the certain red sneakers marched down the runway, West decided that it was time for not only a career change, but also a name change. On his own personal blog he states that he’d like to be referred to as Martin Louis the King, Jr. from here on out. I am making a similar face of confusion as you right now.
