Platform “Cut outs”: Out Before They Ever Were In?

Lately, designers have used innovations of the heel to reach new heights. There have been the Japanese Geta-inspired sandals, which look like flip flops balanced on children’s wooden playing blocks. Manolo Blahnik put his trademark over-the-top stamp on the trend with his debut of the heel-less shoe. And this season, there were plenty of hidden platforms, giving the wearer the look of a heel with the comfort of a platform.

Michael Kors has always been known for his funky and wearable sandals. His shoes combine day-to-day functionality with runway flare. Some of his older styles, like the “Gramercy” sandal, became instant classics. In his newest line, Kors has joined the pack of designers that have strayed away from the basic wedge, platform, or kitten heels by transforming the wedge with his sculpture-inspired “cut-out” heel. While I am not a fan of cut out styles in anything (shirts, dresses, and bathing suits included), I will leave it to all of you to decide if you think cut-out platforms is the next big thing.
